Au revoir Milly-la-Forêt

Au revoir Milly la Forêt thoughts:

Elaine:  it was a town with locals and tourists. A comfortable very french town. A pride in flowers. Chestnut woods, not strong looking trees but the colour of the wood is lovely.

Having some connection to Jean Cocteau from Jackie was good and bits of Jean Cocteau in different places in the town was interesting.  They honoured him. Good to have a town that honours an eccentric.

The Le Cygne  - I liked the frenchness of their main dining room and the contact we had with the locals. At first as outside people and then, as they grew to know us, we were woven into their lives. We had a role.

The man at Brasserie des O'Pignons at dinner and the woman who made the coffee in the morning were so professional and welcoming.

Milly la Forêt is a centre for all of those monuments and things - a centre for going around to all the places, Milly was so well placed for visiting other centres.  Chateau at Fontainebleau - Napoleon, aping the people who had been overthrown by the revolution - skilled, brave, ruthless even and smarter than the rest of them and from low origins. He no doubt did good things but the house presented the very unattractive side that came with wanting to be emperor, the god king.

Chartres looked good from a distance, the singing was beautiful and I was surprised to see it was just 5 ordinary parishioners.  I think I am over cathedrals from the inside and think they should be repurposed and heated better. Re-enactments of historical murders and martyrdoms perhaps? Cirque de Soleil, cinemas…?

Kath: Milly La Forêt- a nice little town people seemed happy, nobody seemed excessively rich, egalitarian feel. Easy going.

Helen: It was the VE public holiday today and the whole place was buoyant last night. From the quantity of bread being bought, I knew the boulangerie was only to be open this morning.  lined up with the locals and brought our croissants, sausage brioche and little quiche to Brasserie des O'Pignons where Elaine and Kath were drinking coffee and working out a strike-provoked change in their UK travel plans.

Here are our last Milly La Forêt pictures:

  1. Geesus, i've gotta say that all the men leaning on the bar at the Brasserie look a bit Oz blokie. I hope Paris humanity is a bit more eclectic x Tyche
