Singapore - not a destination

I did like Singapore, but it is not a destination. Were I a shopper, I might have liked it more. After the rawness of Cambodia, I found Singapore a bit too shiny.  The disparity in wealth in places so close together was a shock. It was very nice though to be able to drink the tap water and to have airconditioning that cooled the room.

A part of the reason why Singapore runs cleanly, safely and with excellent manners, can be seen in these messages, which are on display at railways stations, in the food markets and even on the back of workers.  I haven’t read up on this but to my eye, children are a priority - there seems to be a push on for babies to be born and this city is doing a lot to remove the barriers.  There is a published respect for the elderly and an acceptance of dementia.

The pictorial representations of family don’t appear to extend to LGBTIQA+ though.

No durians!

Carole and I hired a guide for a walking tour of the more interesting sides of Singapore. We chose a local guide with stated expertise in architecture and history, but we got none of that. We went on a tour which had very little walking with a non local who asked us for our interests and then just ignored them for his notion of what we’d find wow. We bailed after two hours and headed back with medicine for sick Anne.

The night food markets were a pleasure though. I loved the mutton curry and lusted after more “carrot cake” (no relation to carrots) and another squashed flat sweet croissant. I could find neither again though, which was sad.

And then we flew home. The Cambodia-Singapore holiday was just great!

    1. Definitely do that. I longed for the neck refrigerated air conditioner that Didy gave me for Xmas one year. It was very handy to have at the Australian Open a couple of years back and would’ve been amazing in Cambodia. It was in the cupboard at home though…
